This week as I approached choosing this song I did what any wise person would really do before they decide that they are going to add this feature to their website. I thought about my philosophy for choosing my song of the week. I asked myself a series of questions such as do I want it to be a chart topper, does it have to be recently released, a male or female artist, a UK originated song, a tune from a particular genre, a song that I went looking for, a song that is technically genius or a song with the ‘ear worm’ quality that has simply caught my attention. I concluded that whilst the last of these would probably be my preference, on different occasions any of these will at some point influence my decision. Todays choice satisfies the majority of these criteria and is none other than the the collaboration from the power house duo of Bruno Mars and Anderson .Paak, entitled ‘Leave the Door Open’.
Simply put, this song is great and is interesting. Interesting may sound like a simple word but this is not true of every song. The composition is elegant with every part really well written. As the song moves through sections, each instrument tastefully progresses. The combination of musical motifs, phrases drum patterns and fills used to transition and accompany each section is perfectly executed. One of my favourite features is the way the string part is written. I have long been a fan of how a well written string part can culture a piece of music and it has been perfectly delivered here. The bass parts are really well conceived. Every aspect down to the tambourine are carefully crafted to shape the energy of the piece. The lyric is well written and performed with style and ‘swagger’ and the song is mixed will. This is what I would call a 10/10.
The best part is that this is one song that features on a collaboration album ‘Silk Sonic’ which really captures its intended style so there is more where this came from. This is a great project and an inspiration for all musicians. It’s not really a surprise as the two featured artists have been making good music for a while and drawing attention to themselves. In summary I for one am very grateful for their contribution to the music scene. Despite it being a year already since it’s release I believe they more than well-deserve to be this weeks song of the week.
